What is Reiki?
Reiki is a complementary, non-invasive treatment that can be used alone or in conjunction with contemporary medications or herbal supplements. Reiki is a form of energy therapy that was discovered (or rediscovered) by Master Mikao Usui in the early 1900’s. It is generally believed that Master Usui’s techniques are based upon traditional Buddhist healing methodologies.
Using the methods set out by Master Usui, the healing energies of Reiki seek to regain balance in the mind, body, and spirit. Essentially, certain frequencies of energy are directed at the subatomic levels of a being. These energies ferret out disease and dysfunction in the system. Then, go to work releasing stagnancies or blockages caused by injury, trauma, or emotional distress. The exact energy waves used during a Reiki session depend upon the need of the individual and the training background of the practitioner.
What Happens during a Reiki Session?
Reiki can be used one on one for hands on sessions, similar to massage therapy, or it can be sent over a distance. Both hands on and distant healings are equally beneficial. For those looking for Reiki sessions on the Internet, you will likely be looking at distant healing sessions.
Distant healings allow for increased flexibility, both for the individual and the practitioner. Distant healing sessions are usually set out as either half hour or hour long sessions. These sessions can be done in real time, as part of a collective list of sessions, or through an energy ball called a chi ball that can be used at any time.
Generally, practitioners ask individuals to rest and relax during a session. Although the energies work just as well with a moving target, resting allows full use of the relaxing feel of the energy flow. During the actual session, the majority of people feel a heightened sense of well-being. Some can even feel the static, warmth, or chill of particular frequencies as they are being sent.
Afterwards, most people feel recharged and more relaxed. Issues (particularly emotionally charged ones) are sometimes brought up so that they can be faced and then released. Cleansing and balancing of the system tends to continue over a period of three days to a week. However, the process can continue for up to three weeks.
What to Look for in a Reiki Practitioner?
On the Internet, you will find a quite a number of different Reiki practitioners. Prices range from almost free to over a hundred dollars. This variety can be rather confusing.
First, look at the training of the practitioner. Traditional Reiki is taught in three levels. Distant healing is taught in the second level course. Therefore, in order to do a distant healing session, a practitioner must be certified to at least the second level. In most cases, you will see Reiki Master listed somewhere on the listings page. This says that the person has completed Reiki training and is able to teach Reiki to others.
Next, it is possible to find a practitioner who interprets healing in ways that suit your own beliefs. Reiki is commonly used as a collective term that actually includes a multitude of variations, literally hundreds of them. Some Reiki types such as Usui Reiki Ryoho adhere very closely to the traditional teachings of Master Usui. Other forms such as Tibetan Reiki and Shamanic Reiki have been expanded or adapted to include other traditional belief systems. Still others, like Angel Healing and Dolphin Healing, are novel inventions often created through channelling.
Finally, to further refine your search, look for the type of Reiki that best suits your needs. For instance, if you are looking for stress relief, almost any form of Reiki will do. Alternately, if you are looking for healing for a specific condition you may be able to find Reiki practitioners that specialize in that area.
